Our list spans several continents, time zones, and (of course) countries, and there’s probably at least one or two you haven’t visited before. Check them out before planning your next globe-spanning world tour, and hit the richest countries first – as a general rule, they cost the most to visit.
9. Philadelphia - $388 Billion
The “City of Brotherly Love” is a surprising entry on this list, since it isn’t often thought of as one of the most major cities in the world. But it’s GDP of $388 billion says otherwise, though – it places it as the 9th richest city on the planet. That’s a lot of cheesesteaks, that’s for sure.
8.Mexico City - $390 Billion
The capital of Mexico is also the richest city in Latin America, with a gross domestic product of $390 billion. It’s also the only city on this list that isn’t in one of the 10 richest countries in the world, which gives you a small idea of how impressive its GDP really is.
7. Osaka - $417 Billion
The “commercial capital” of Japan is Osaka, with a $417 billion GDP. A good chunk of that figure is thanks to giant electronics companies like Panasonic, Sanyo, Sharp, and more, all of which call Osaka their home. But it has a thriving diverse economy apart from those giants as well.6. London - $565 Billion
Like New York City, London is a very important city in the financial world. Commonly known as the financial link between the East and the West, London has a $565 billion GDP that makes it one of the richest cities on the planet. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that it’s home to some of the biggest and most important financial organizations in the world.
5.Chicago - $574 Billion
The Windy City’s $574 billion GDP places it high among the world’s richest cities. But it’s rich in other ways too, from a long and illustrious history, to many fine educational institutions, various sports teams and much more. As if that weren’t enough, it’s also the hometown of President Barack Obama.
4.Los Angeles - $592 Billion
Los Angeles is most famous throughout the world as the home of Hollywood and the American movie industry. But, as its $592 billion gross domestic product will attest, it has a diverse system of economic production of its own. And it makes it one of the very richest cities on Earth.
3.Paris - $813.4 billion
The capital of France is one of the most famous and beautiful cities on the planet, but did you also know it was one of the richest? Its $813.4 billion GDP gets that credit for that distinction – the largest city in Europe is also responsible for a full 25% of the GDP of the entire country of France. Plus, I heard they have pretty good food there too.
2.New York City - $1.406 Trillion
Considered by many to be the financial capital of the world (if not the plain old capital of the world), New York City is home to many of the planets’s top banks and financial institutions, as well as the New York Stock Exchange. That, plus the countless other business that call The Big Apple home all lead up to a $1.406 Trillion GDP, and a position as the 2nd richest city in the world.
1.Tokyo - $1.479 Trillion
But the honor of richest city on Earth goes squarely to Tokyo, Japan. The capital of Japan has suffered some economic slowdown in recent years (who hasn’t?), but not enough to keep it from maintaining the world’s highest gross domestic product of any city in the world, at a staggering $1479 trillion! Perhaps not coincidentally, it also happens to be one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in.
