The Highest-Paid TV Actress of 2014

It’s no secret that Hollywood has always been a man’s world. The top 10 actresses on our list this year earned a total of $140 million between June 2013 to June 2014; that’s a far stretch from the combined $214 million our male TV actors earned this year. Still, no one can beat the most powerful woman in television right now: Sofia Vergara.

No. 1: Sofia Vergara

$37 million

Vergara, 41, continues her streak as the top earning TV actress – three years running -- in large part due to her business savvy – the Colombia native secured endorsement deals with Diet Pepsi, CoverGirl, Head & Shoulders and AT&T, among others. She also has a 12-year contract with K-Mart and a fragrance, movie roles and, of course, a reportedly $325K per episode take-home for Modern Family. Off-camera, the talent management and entertainment-marketing firm she co-founded, Latin World Entertainment, is launching a Spanish-language tech news site. Combining all of her various ventures together, and Vergara out-earns FORBES’ second-highest paid actress by more than $20 million.

No. 2: Mariska Hargitay

$13 million

Hargitay remains the second-highest earning television actress for the second year in a row due to a salary increase for her Emmy and Golden Globe-winning turn as Detective Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. The drama, which was renewed for a 16th season, boasted a double-digit increase in viewership the past season, largely attributable to Hargitay’s star power. After hours, the 50-year-old runs her own non-profit, The Joyful Heart Foundation, to confront childhood sexual abuse. In addition to her $450K per episode salary for SVU, Hargitay earns significant profits from extensive syndication of the popular show.

No. 3: Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting

 $11 million

At 28, Cuoco is one of the youngest actresses on FORBES’ list. She takes home a reported $350K per episode for The Big Bang Theory, Chuck Lorre’s top-rated comedy, and profits considerably from syndication of the popular show. The actress also has an endorsement deal with Priceline and a movie coming out in 2015 with Kevin Hart. Cuoco and the rest of her Big Bang cast mates recently renegotiated her salary for a significant raise that is reportedly worth up to $1 million per episode.

No. 4 (TIE): Julianna Margulies

$10 million

Margulies, 48, new to the Celeb 100 this year, is an Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning actress and producer best known for her roles as Nurse Carol Hathaway on the NBC drama ER and currently stars in the CBS legal drama, The Good Wife, as the attorney Alicia Florrick. In addition to her $6.5 million haul for her roles as actress and producer of The Good Wife, Margulies profits from a multiwindow syndication deal for the show and a lucrative L’Oreal contract -- all of which helped her jump nine spots from last year's list.

No. 4 (TIE): Ellen Pompeo

$10 million

A veteran on FORBES’ list, Pompeo is still raking in millions for her role as Meredith Grey on the long-running ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy, which is tied as the network’s top series among the adult demographic and is ranked third in overall viewership, after Castle and Scandal. The actress, 44, and cast mate Patrick Dempsey signed on for an additional two seasons of the show in January.

No. 4 (TIE): Cobie Smulders

$10 million

It was a big year for Vancouver-native Smulders, 32, who earned a reported $340K per episode for the last season of the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother and made additional profits from her roles in Captain America: Winter Soldier and other smaller movies. Combined with almost $1.5 million in syndication revenues for HIMYM, and Smulders rose a few spots on FORBES’ list this year. And fans need not worry -- despite the end of the show, Smulders can still be seen on movie screens in the near future: Avengers: Age of Ultron comes out in 2015.

No. 5: Alyson Hannigan

$9.5 million

Like Smulders, Hannigan, 40, earned a reported $340K per episode, according to insiders, during the ninth season of HIMYM. Adding in syndication values bumps Hannigan up to $9.5 million. After a short siesta from television, the mother of two will return to the small screen in the fall, starring in the Ben Affleck/Matt Damon sitcom, More Time With Family, on CBS.
